Service line testing for homes and buildings

Ordered draw sequences that indicate which segment of the supply path is contributing. Independent of every excavation contractor.

Service-line investigation

Sampling can help distinguish a fixture-level issue from lead contributed farther upstream in the water path.

Sampling design matters

First-draw, flushed or sequential samples can be selected depending on the lead question being investigated.

Measured lead concentrations

Accredited laboratory analysis reports the lead concentration associated with each sampled location.

Service line testing

A draw sequence describes the supply path that a single sample cannot

01
Establish what is visible
The pipe where it enters the cellar is examined for material, diameter and any evidence of a splice, since a repair at the wall can mean two materials in one run.
02
Record the building and street history
Construction date, any documented replacement, recent street work and whether a neighbor has replaced their own connection.
03
Request the stagnation period in advance
The client is asked to leave the taps undisturbed beforehand, and the elapsed time is written into the field record rather than estimated afterward.
04
Collect the sequence
Bottles are drawn in order along the supply path, with each one reaching further upstream than the last, with the sequence documented at the sampling event.
05
Read the pattern rather than a single number
Where concentrations rise or fall across the sequence indicates which segment of the path is contributing, which is the finding that guides any repair.

Professional Water Service Line and Lead Testing

The water service line runs between the street main and the building, and it is the segment property owners can inspect least easily. Ownership is frequently divided along its length and records rarely describe what is physically in the ground.

Olympian Water Testing provides professional lead in water testing for homeowners, boards, managing agents, building owners and property buyers throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

Establishing What the Supply Path Contains

Where the pipe is reachable at the wall, material can often be assessed by appearance, by whether a magnet holds and by a careful scratch. That establishes the material at that point alone.

Lead bearing components also remain in current use beyond the service line, including brass faucet bodies, angle stops, mixing valves, ball and gate valves and pipe fittings, so the assessment covers the whole path rather than one segment.

Why Lead Is Sampled as a Sequence

Lead is drawn as an ordered series along the supply path. The first draw reflects water standing in the fixture and the branch line behind it, and successive draws reach progressively further upstream toward the riser and the water service line.

The pattern across that series indicates which segment is contributing, which is the finding that determines whether the appropriate response concerns a fixture, a branch line, a riser or the water service line.

How the Sampling Event Is Conducted

Our highly trained and skilled laboratory technicians attend the property and conduct the sampling event. Where stagnation is required it is requested of the client and the elapsed hours are entered in the field record.

Outlet screens are left undisturbed during collection so particulate lead accumulating there is captured, and samples are handled under documented chain of custody with holding times observed.

Independent Assessment Before Committing to Work

Replacing a fixture, replacing a branch line or riser, and replacing the water service line are three entirely different undertakings, and the sequence indicates which is warranted.

Olympian Water Testing has conducted this work since 1991 under NELAP accredited laboratory analysis, and enquiries are received at any hour of any day.

Common questions

How do I know if my property has a lead service line?
Service-line material may be identified through utility records, physical inspection or local inventories, but water testing answers a different question: whether lead is present at the sampled tap.
Can a lead service line affect every faucet equally?
Not necessarily. Lead contribution can vary with fixture, plumbing path and water use, so individual outlets may produce different results.
Should water be tested before and after lead service line replacement?
Testing before can establish the existing condition, while appropriately timed follow-up testing can provide information after replacement and related plumbing work.
Can lead remain after a service line is replaced?
Yes. Other plumbing components may still contain lead, and disturbance during work can temporarily change water conditions, which is why follow-up evaluation may be useful.
